Another Round Means Another Freshman Leader for Ball State Men's Golf
February 10, 2026 | Men's Golf
DADE CITY, Fla. -- Freshmen Luke Johnston and Brody Sorrell led the Ball State men's golf team through a pair of opening rounds of the Lake Jovita Invitational on Monday. Tuesday, it was Samuel Harris' turn.
Harris, the Cardinals' third sterling freshman this season, spun a 6-under par 66 on the Lake Jovita South Course in the event's final round to record the tournament's second-best score in a single round -- one stroke beneath Sorrell's 65 on Monday. Harris was one of four golfers to card a 66 during Tuesday's final round, firing seven birdies to counter his lone bogey on the par-3 seventh hole.
While Harris rose 36 spots in the standings in the third round, Sorrell, playing as an individual and not in the Cardinals' 5-man lineup, did his best to move into title contention, too. Sorrell's 7-under 65 in Monday's second round put him in a fifth-place tie with Johnston through 36 holes. He was 3-under par on Tuesday to finish the tournament 8-under and in a four-way tie for third place. Sorrell finished three strokes out of second place, and five behind tournament champion Shane Ochs of Wright State. Sorrell and Ochs shared the tournament lead with 18 birdies over three rounds.
Johnston, meanwhile, led the 88-man tournament field with 38 holes of par. He shot 1-under on Tuesday but slipped to 10th place overall.
The Cardinals are idle until March 15-17 when they visit the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Florida.
