Men’s Golf Holds One-Stroke Lead After Day 1 of RedHawk Intercollegiate

PITTSBURGH - - In the program's first two rounds at the Pittsburgh Field Club, the Ball State men's team got off to a hot start, firing -11 (557) to hold a one stroke lead after the first 36 holes of the RedHawks Intercollegiate.
As a team, the Cardinals shot -2 (282) to tie for the best opening round of the day, while firing a -9 (275) to tie for the lowest second round of the day. VCU is currently second at -10 (558), followed by in-state rival Butler at -4 (564).
Individually, senior Cameron Young led the way and is currently tied for third overall with a score of -7 (135). His day included an opening round -4 (67) and a second round -3 (68) on the 71-par, 6,828-yard course.
Young would tie for third among the field in par 5 average at -6 (4.25), while ranking fourth among the field with a par 4 average of -3 (3.83). he also ranked second among the field in total birdies, with 11.
While Young's opening round -4 (67) tied as the lowest first round among the 84-player field, it was not Ball State's lowest round of the day. That honor went to senior Avery Mahoney who carded a -5 (66) in the second round. The effort brought Mahoney to E (144) for the tournament and currently has him tied for 21st overall.
Junior Happy Gilmore continued his solid play, shooting -2 (69) in the opening round and is tied for 11th overall at -2 (140) after going even in his second.
Freshman Mattingly Upchurch also went sub-par in his second round, shooting -1 (70). He is tied with Mahoney for 21st overall at E (142).
As a team, the Cardinals tied for first among the field in par 4 average at +1 (4.01), while tying for third in both par 3 average (+9; 3.18) and par 5 average (-15; 4.63). Ball State also led all 14 teams with 40 total birdies.
Action in the RedHawk Intercollegiate concluded Tuesday with the final round starting at 9 a.m.
