The 2024 Mid-American Conference runner-up as Freshman of the Year, Mahoney transferred to Ball State for his sophomore season and now competes in his second year with the Cardinals ... hails from Burlington, Ontario, one of two international players on the Ball State roster.
"Avery's 'good' is really good," said Cardinals coach Mike Fleck. "Unfortunately for Avery, he's dealt with the injury bug since he got here last year. But towards the back end of the fall, when he got healthy and playing consistently, he was pretty competitive for us. He gave us two powerful rounds last year at the MAC Championship that helped us secure a top-two spot. I look for Avery to be another one of those competitive guys that, if he can stay healthy, he's going to help us quite a bit this spring."
Fall 2025 (Jr.): A 71.77 stroke average over 13 rounds and five tournaments was Ball State's second-best during the fall ... had three top-10 finishes during the fall, including medalist honors at the Purdue Fall Individual, Oct. 16-17 (74-69---143, +1) ... low round of 67 at the Put Me In Coach Invitational, Oct. 7, and fired below 70 in four rounds overall ... ninth at The Indy at Forest Hills (69-60---139, -1) and 10th at the Put Me In Coach Invitational (71-76-67---214, +4).
2024-25 (So.): Competed in 20 rounds for the Cardinals, with a stroke average of 75.20, and five sub-par rounds ... one of his best rounds, though, was a two-under par 70 in the opening round of the MAC Championships that helped Ball State stay in contention and eventually finish in second place ... best round was a 68 at the Boilermaker Invitational in late April ... struggled through injuries throughout his first fall season at Ball State.
BEFORE BALL STATE: Runner-up as MAC Freshman of the Year in 2023-24 while shooting a 74.70 average over 30 rounds for Eastern Michigan ... played in every tournament for EMU and served as the Eagles' No. 3 golfer ... highlights included a 10th-place finish at the Davidson River Run Collegiate (65-72-73—210) in which he shot his lowest round of the year ... finished 19th at the Badger Invitational (72-74-69—215) in which he tied with Kuntz, four strokes behind Ball State leader Kash Bellar ...  recorded three top-20 finishes last year including an 18th-place standing at Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate (75-75-71—221).
