Men's Golf Takes 4th at RedHawk Intercollegiate, Paced by Cameron Young

PITTSBURGH -- Led by an 11-place finish from senior Cameron Young, the Ball State men's golf team placed fourth among the 14-team field at the RedHawk Intercollegiate hosted by Miami (OH) at the Pittsburgh Field Club.
The clubhouse leader by one stroke after the opening two rounds Monday, the Cardinals were unable to find a groove during Tuesday's final trip around the par-71, 6,828-yard track and finished the two-day event at -5 (847). VCU would capture the tournament title with a final team score of -15 (837).
Young led Ball State's effort at -3 (210), including rounds of -4 (67) and -3 (68) Monday. Young finished the event tied for fifth among the 84-player field with a par 4 average of -2 (3.93). He also tied with freshman Mattingly Upchurch for the team lead with 11 total birdies.
Junior Happy Gilmore also earned a spot in the top 15, tying for 14th overall at -1 (212). Gilmore carded par on 17 of his 18 holes Tuesday, tying for Ball State's second-lowest round of the day at +1 (72). The effort helped Gilmore tie for the tournament lead with 43 total holes played at par.
Upchurch continued to impress in his freshman campaign, firing Ball State's lowest round Tuesday at even-par 71. The effort, which included two birdies and 14 pars, helped him tie for 18th after a 54-hole even-par finish (213).
The Cardinals also counted a +1 (71) from sophomore Luke Johnston Tuesday, his lowest round of the event. The effort helped him climb 12 spots up the final leaderboard into a tie for 40th at +5 (218).
As a team, Ball State led the tournament in par 3 scoring average, at +12 (3.16), and tied for fourth par 4 scoring average, at +9 (4.07).
Up next, the Cardinals return to Muncie and Delaware Country Club to host the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, Sept. 26-27.
