October 08, 2023 | Field Hockey
FARMVILLE, Va. - It was a crisp fall day at Longwood Sunday afternoon that resulted in a heartbreaking Mid-American Conference loss for the Cardinals. Ball State and Longwood played neck-and-neck, but the Lancers would come out on top in the final minutes of today's game, 3-2.
With the loss, Ball State drops to 5-7 on the season while evening its MAC record to 2-2. Longwood improved to 3-11 overall and 1-3 in league action.
After a somewhat defensive stance by both squads in the first two periods of play, Longwood would strike first to take a 1-0 edge over Ball State at the 26:21 mark.
It only took about a minute for the Cardinals to respond with a goal of their own as Kerrianne McClay found the back of the cage after connecting on a corner with the assist from Michaela Graney. With the late second stanza scores, both teams would enter halftime tied at 1-1.
Longwood found its offensive rhythm in the second 30 minutes of action, scoring goals in the third and fourth quarters to take the 3-1 advantage over Ball State.
Although the Cardinals had a few scoring opportunities, they struggled to connect until late in the final quarter after Graney scored BSU's second goal of the day off the assist from McClay. Despite the Cardinals' efforts, they were unable to connect offensively the remainder of the contest.
The Ball State field hockey team returns home next weekend for two contests as it hosts Bellarmine on Friday at 1 pm ET and Big Ten foe Indiana on Sunday at noon.
