Field Hockey Downs Lock Haven in OT Thriller; Vandevoorde Scores Winning Goal
September 14, 2025 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - With the game tied at the end of regulation, the Ball State field hockey team (2-5) completed the overtime victory to snatch a 2-1 thriller from Lock Haven (0-6) after freshman Jade Vandevoorde found the back of the cage for the game-winning goal.Â
Â
Vandevoorde netted the winning goal unassisted in the extra session at the 64-minute mark. It was Vandevoorde's first collegiate score of her career as a true freshman.Â
Â
After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals struck first just 48 seconds into the third quarter of play to take a 1-0 edge over the Bald Eagles. Grace Clokie scored first for BSU and she was assisted by Vandevoorde and Emma van Hal.Â
Â
About 13 minutes later Lock Haven's Madison Friend knotted the score 1-1.Â
Â
Both teams were giving ample opportunities to score in the final period of regulation but came up short as the Cardinals and the Bald Eagles played tight defense throughout the last 15 minutes of action.Â
Â
As time was winding down, Lock Haven had one more opportunity to score but was unable to connect due to Ball State's defensive stance which ultimately sent the game into the extra period.
Â
In goal was Carleigh Hofelich with seven saves as she picked up her first win as a Cardinal. Ball State also had a season best 21 shots which came from 10 different players. The offense was led by Clokie with four shot attempts.Â
Â
The Ball State field hockey team will open Mid-American Conference action on Friday when it travels to Longwood University for a 2 pm ET start in Farmville, Va.
