October 13, 2023 | Field Hockey
Â
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (5-8, 2-3 MAC) dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Bellarmine (6-7, 3-2 MAC) Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.Â
Â
Kerrianne McClay started the game off strong for the Cardinals scoring in the first minute of play. McClay capitalized off a corner but got help with assists from Emma Hilton and Libby Kraus.Â
Â
Ball State played strong defensively throughout the first 30 minutes of action, holding Bellarmine scoreless which allowed the Cardinals to retain a slim 1-0 advantage over the Knights at intermission.Â
Â
After the break, Emma Van Hal found Fleur Knopert for the Cardinals second score of the day at the 36-minute mark in the third period. Knopert's goal was her 12th of the season.Â
Â
Ball State sat comfortably with a 2-0 lead because of its stingy defense at the start of the second half.
Â
The Knights finally managed to get on the board after a goal from Paige Hoyer with just a minute remaining in the third stanza.Â
Â
The final frame took a turn for the worse for Ball State as an own goal was scored late in the fourth period to knot the game 2-2 and send the game into overtime.
Â
In the extra period, Bellarmine's Peyton Hudson found the back of the cage quickly with a little over two minutes shaved off the clock to give the Knights the OT victory.Â
Â
The Ball State field hockey team will continue action at home Sunday when it hosts Big Ten foe Indiana. The game is set to start at noon.
