
Men's S&D Travels to Southern Illinois for MAC Championships

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State men's swimming & diving team will look to finish the season on a strong note this week when it heads to Shea Natatorium on the campus of Southern Illinois for the 2022 Mid-American Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.
Joining the Cardinals and host Salukis at the four-day meet are Evansville, Miami, Missouri State, and Valparaiso.

The fast and fierce competition kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. CT Wednesday with the 200 medley relay and concludes Saturday evening with the 400 freestyle relay.

Ball State will be looking to build upon last season's MAC Championships meet in which it broke five program records, saw the program's first MAC individual swimming champion since 2006, and had the program's first MAC individual diving champion since 1998.
Overall, the Cardinals have been trending upwards under the leadership of fourth-year head coach J. Agnew, including tallying 511.50 total points at last season's meet. It was the program's highest point total at the MAC Championships since the 2005 event when Ball State finished third at 571.
AT THE 2021 MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS:
The men's swimming & diving program opened the meet with a bang, as Hunter Ongay captured BSU's first medal of the competition with a second-place effort on the 1-meter diving board. Overall, 12 different Cardinals scored at least two points of the first day of competition, with five different student-athletes finishing in the top eight of their respective events.

As good a day one went, the second was even better. The biggest highlight came when Joey Garberick became Ball State's first individual swimming champion since the 2006 season when he won the 100 breaststroke in 54.29, after breaking the program record in prelims with a time of 53.99.

Garberick's effort was one of five program records on the day, and he also combined with Jared Holder, Bryce Handshoe and Jack Wolfred for the 200 medley relay mark at 1:29.44.
Zach Zishka tuned in BSU's second individual program record of the meet by breaking the 21-year old mark in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 3:58.51. In addition, Jared Holder broke his own record in the 100 backstroke set at the 2020 league meet with a time of 48.32.

Rounding out the record-setting day were Davis Meyn, Landyn Riester, Drew Weeks, and Jack Wolfred who swooped in to capture the program record in the 800 freestyle relay at 6:39.96.

Third day of the championship gave BSU its second event champion, when Ongay capture the top spot on the 3-meter diving board with a score of 310.55. Ongay became Ball State's first MAC diving champion since 1998 when Dave Garrow won the 1-meter. Garrow was also BSU's last 3-meter champion, winning that title in 1997.

The Cardinals capped off a solid regular season with a dominating win against Valparaiso (153-95), following dual meet wins over Eastern Illinois (161-95) and Bellarmine (162-100) earlier in the year.

During the regulation season, Ball State's student-athletes tallied 32 individual event wins and four relay victories. Joey Garberick and Owen Chaye lead the way with six individual event wins apiece.

The 2021-22 Cardinals proved collectively they are ready to compete and rise to the next level, with 16 different individuals collecting at least one event win. In addition, 13 different Cardinals enter the MAC Championship ranked in the top 16 in the league in their respective events.
