
Men's Swimming & Diving Wraps Up Final Day At MAC Championships

CARBONDALE, Illinois --- The Ball State men's swimming and diving team closed the fourth and final day of the 2022 Mid-American Conference Championship with two more medals Saturday evening at Southern Illinois' Shea Natatorium.
Finals action began with sophomore Zach Zishka placing first in the consolation final of the 1650 freestyle, earning ninth overall with a time of 16:10.73. Junior Aiden Maurer continued the action in the A Final by placing eighth at 16:05.23, earning him the seventh fastest time in program history. Â
The Cardinals continued with two outstanding performances from sophomore Joey Garberick in the 200 breaststroke and senior Hunter Ongay in the 3-Meter diving.
Garberick followed in the fashion of the 2021 MAC Championships with a third-place touch in the 200 breaststroke and a time of 1:59.53. This effort brought home the first medal of the day for the Cardinals.
To finish his senior season strong, Ongay brought the heat in the 3-meter diving competition and finished with a score of 299.95, earning him second place and a silver medal to finish out his college career.
As the only Cardinal to make finals for the 100 freestyle, junior Jack Wolfred added to the scoring efforts with a time of 45.61 and a 13th-place finish.  His effort in the event during prelims rewarded him with the fourth fastest time in Ball State history at 45.21.
Freshman Max Kruglov brought back an outstanding performance in the 200 backstroke where he placed 10th overall with a time of 1:50.52 to improve his sixth-fastest time in program history. Sophomore Sam Jennings was close behind with a time of 1:53.06, earning 11th overall in the event.
To close out the competition, Wolfred, junior Patrick White, Joey Garberick, and senior Duncan McLarty teamed up for the 400 freestyle relay where they clocked a time of 3:00.96, just .27 seconds off of the program record.
The Ball State men's swimming and diving team returns home to Muncie with five program records and a combined eight medals to top off the 2022 MAC Championship.
