Men’s S&D Off To Record Start at MAC Championships
March 02, 2022 | Men's Swimming and Diving
CARBONDALE, Ill. - - It was a record start for the Ball State men's swimming & diving program, which opened the 2022 Mid-American Conference Championships with a program record in the 200 medley relay Wednesday night at Southern Illinois' Shea Natatorium.
Freshman Reece Manning, sophomore Joey Garberick, junior Bryce Handshoe, and junior Owen Chaye combined for a time of 1:28.02 to best the previous program record in the 200 medley relay of 1:29.44 set at last season's MAC Championships.
The Cardinals nearly earned a second program record in the 800 freestyle relay to close the opening day of the four-day MAC Championships, with a final wall touch of 6:43.36. The effort by senior Ryan Short, junior Landyn Riester, freshman Michael Mitsynskyy, and junior Aiden Maurer will go down as the fourth-fastest in program history.
Overall, both relays placed fourth at the meet, giving BSU a total of 60 points to open the competition.
One note out of the day's time trials, Chaye logged the second-fastest time in program history in the 50 freestyle, clocking in at 20.26.
Wednesday was a quick night for the league's swimmers, as just the two relays were contested. Action does pick up Thursday, with three individual swimming events, 1-meter diving, and the 200 freestyle relay.
Preliminary round action begins at 10:30 a.m. CT, diving a 1 p.m. CT, and finals at 6:30 p.m. CT at SIU's Shea Natatorium.
