March 05, 2022 | Men's Swimming and Diving
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Ball State men's swimming & diving team closed the third day of the 2022 Mid-American Conference Championship with two more program records, two bronze medals, and its first gold medal of the meet.
Â
The highlight of the day came in the 100 breaststroke when sophomore Joey Garberick defended his MAC title from a year ago with another record-setting performance.Â
Â
After earning the top seed in the prelims, Garberick touched the wall in 53.62 in the finals to break the mark of 53.99 he set winning the event last season. The effort was also an NCAA B Cut.

That was not the only record Garberick had a hand in setting, however, as he capped the day swimming the second leg of the 400 Medley Relay. Freshman Reece Manning swam the first leg, while junior Bryce Handshoe and junior Owen Chaye swam the final two helping the quartet secure third with a program-record time of 3:15.16.
Â
Friday's finals started with Handshoe taking third in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 48.38 for the second fastest time in program history. He was one of three BSU swimmers to score in the event.

Next up for the Cardinals was junior Aiden Maurer in the 200 freestyle, with a 13th-place time of 1:40.17. Â
Â
Following Garberick's win the 100 breaststoke, the Cardinals had three more student-athletes score in the 100 backstroke, led by freshman Reece Manning who placed fifth overall in 48.71, while his prelim time of 48.48 was the second-fastest time in program history.
Â
Freshman Ethan Pheifer also brought home a new top time for the program in the 100 backstroke with a 49.98 which is the third fastest time slot for program history.
Â
In 3-meter diving prelims, defending champion senior Hunter Ongay earned the second seed with a score if 299.80, while sophomore Isaac Hunter earned the fourth seed at 292.50.
Â
