RICHMOND, Ky. -- Avery Mahoney was one of just nine out of 60 individuals to shoot a round of par or better on a blustery day in Eastern Kentucky. Mahoney paced six Ball State golfers with a 12th-place finish at The Indy at Arlington, conducted on a par-70 short track at the University Club at Arlington.
Mahoney managed an even-par 70 during second-round play on Saturday, improving from a +6 scorecard in the opening round. Of the nine individuals that shot a round of par, none did it twice.
Mahoney (76-70--146), a runner-up as MAC Freshman of the Year in 2024, earned his best finish of the season, pacing Cardinals golfers in the all-individual field. Senior Griffin Hare (74-73--147) was just one stroke off Mahoney's pace and finished 16th, also his best of the year. Only 18 out of 60 finished the two rounds within seven strokes of par. Just one golfer, Grant Phillips (67-73--140) of Tennessee-Martin, finished at even par for the event, shooting -3 and +3 for a final card of 140.
"It was a tough, cold, windy day," said 27th-year Ball State coach Mike Fleck. "Avery and Griffin deserve credit for their finish. It was the best finish this year for both of them. Conditions were challenging."
Seniors Colin Nasser (75-78--153) and Drew Todd (76-79--155) finished 35th and 39th, respectively. Happy Gilmore (83-74--157) was +13 in his opening round, but fought conditions to improve by nine strokes and finish 43rd. Fellow freshman Gavin Hare (78-81--159) finished the day 50th.
