Men's Golf Makes Annual Trip to Purdue Fall Invitational This Week
October 11, 2025 | Men's Golf
MUNCIE, Ind. -- For the fifth straight year, the Ball State men's golf team ventures an hour to the west to battle in the Purdue Fall Invite.Â
Head coach Mike Fleck, veteran senior Carter Smith and a strong contingent of youngsters take on Purdue and 13 other programs in a 54-hole event at the Boilermakers' Kampen-Cosler Golf Course (par 72, 7,465 yards), this Monday and Tuesday. A pair of individuals will participate in a 36-hole individual event, 18 holes each day, at the adjacent Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.
Following individual events the past two weeks, Ball State resumes its fall schedule after a record-breaking team title in the Cardinals' own Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, Sept. 20-21. The Cardinals' youth was showcased in that event with freshmen Luke Johnston and Samuel Harris sharing medalist honors, both with a program-record 198 over three rounds to establish the lowest individual score in program history. Johnston bested Harris over a four-hole playoff to claim the individual title, and both were named Mid-American Conference golfers of the week for their performance.Â
For Harris, it was already his second MAC Golfer of the Week award, having earned the honor two weeks earlier, too, after a second-place finish at the Golfweek Fall Challenge, Sept. 7-9, in South Carolina. Johnston finished fourth in the same event.
Together, Harris and Johnston are leading the Ball State lineup through an exciting stretch with the Cardinals finishing first and third in the past two events, despite the regular presence of just one senior. In this week's Purdue Fall Invite, Smith will be flanked by four Ball State newcomers -- Johnston in the No. 1 position and Harris at No. 2; and joined by junior transfer Cameron Young at No. 4 and sophomore transfer Aidan Gutierrez at No. 5. For Gutierrez, a former IHSAA state champion from Valparaiso, it is his Ball State debut in the team lineup following his arrival from Baylor.
This week's Purdue event features 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 13, followed by a final round on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Junior Avery Mahoney and sophomore Happy Gilmore represent the Cardinals in the individual event.
