
Cardinals Split Two Games on Senior Day with Bobcats

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team honored its seniors prior to the start of the second game with Ohio on Sunday. The Cardinals won the game that was halted from Saturday, 16-6, before the Bobcats claimed a series split with a 15-10 win in the second game.
BSU honored Steven Washilewski, Jake Lewis, Max McKee, Zach Losey, Tyler Ruetschle, Andre Orselli, Amir Wright, Adam Christianson, Nick Powell, and Trenton Quartermaine prior to the start of game two.
Wright has reached safely in 50 of the 51 games this season and extended his streak to 24 games. Quartermaine has reached safely in 27-straight contests. Powell saw his streak of reaching safely extend to 14, while Ryan Peltier extended his to 11.
Zach Cole and Christianson led the Cardinals across the two games as they each recorded five hits on the day. Adam Tellier paced Ball State with five RBIs on the day.
Game One – Ball State 16, Ohio 6
Quartermaine drew a one-out walk to start off the bottom of the first. Powell grounded out to second, but moved Quartermaine to second. Hunter Dobbins doubled up the middle as the shortstop tried to make a diving stop but the ball trickled into the outfield and Quartermaine scored. Cole singled to right field to drive in Dobbins from second. Tellier followed with a triple to right center to score Cole as Ball State took a 3-0 lead into the second.
The Cardinals scored seven runs in the bottom of the second and took a 10-0 lead. Quartermaine drove in one run on an RBI sac fly to center. Wright scored on a balk. Dobbins notched an RBI single. Cole produced an RBI double. Tellier singled to right for an RBI single. Peltier and Christianson recorded back-to-back RBI doubles.
Ohio got on the board in the top of the third with a solo home run. The Bobcats started the top of the fourth with back-to-back homers and ended the inning with five runs on six hits. Ohio cut the Ball State lead to 10-6.
Cole led off the bottom of the fourth with a bunt single to third. Tellier belted an RBI double to right center as Cole scored. Peltier grounded out to short, but Tellier advanced to third. Tellier scored on a wild pitch. Christianson launched an absolute no doubter over the right field wall and put the Cardinals on top 13-6 after four innings.
Peltier produced an opposite field home run to right field to extend the Ball State lead to 14-6 in the bottom of the sixth. Christianson followed with a double to left center. Wright drove in Christianson with an RBI single to center. Quartermaine reached on an error by the first baseman, which allowed Wright to score from first. BSU claimed a 16-6 victory as Mac Ayres tossed a shutout seventh inning.
Trennor O'Donnell got the start on the mound and went 3 1/3 innings. He surrendered six earned runs on nine hits and had three strikeouts. Nate Dohm got the win and improved to 3-1 on the year. He tossed 1 2/3 innings of perfect ball with four strikeouts. Ayres added two shutout innings with one strikeout, and he surrendered just one hit.
Hudson Boncal got the loss as he went 1 2/3 innings in the start. He gave up 10 earned runs on nine hits. He fell to 2-3 on the year.
Game Two – Ohio 15, Ball State 10
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as AJ Rausch hit a two-run homer to right field. Ohio added two more run in the top of the first and took a 4-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
Quartermaine put the Cardinals on the board with a solo blast over the right field wall. Powell followed with a single to left field. Dobbins also singled to left and gave the Cardinals runners on first and second. Cole reached on an error by the first baseman that scored Powell from second and cut the deficit to 4-2 after one full inning.
Ohio extended its lead to 5-2 in the top of the second.
The Cardinals were unfazed as Christianson and Justin Conant started the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles. Wright tied the game with one swing of the bat as he launched a three-run home run over the right field wall.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Christianson gave Ball State is first lead of the game with a solo shot to right field.
The Bobcats answered with four runs on four hits and regained the lead, 9-6. Ohio added two more runs in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to 11-6.
Cole led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to deep right center and cut the deficit to 11-7.
Quartermaine and Powell led off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back walks. Cole was hit by a pitch with one out to load the bases for the Cardinals. Tellier singled through the left side to score Quartermaine and Powell. Peltier cut the deficit to just one run as he singled through the left side to score Cole. The Cardinals trailed 11-10 after six innings.
The Bobcats pulled away in the seventh and eighth innings as they scored two runs in each inning and claimed a 15-10 victory.
Washilewski got the start for the Cardinals and went 1/3 of an inning with a strikeout and three earned runs on one hit. Dohm got the loss in 3 1/3 innings of relief and fell to 3-2. He surrendered six earned runs on six hits and produced two strikeouts. Brown added 1 2/3 innings and struck out two batters as he gave up two earned runs on four hits. Orselli added 2/3 of an inning with two earned runs. Ayres provided 1 2/3 innings with two earned runs on two hits. Ruetschle was lights out for BSU as he tossed 1 1/3 innings of perfect ball with four strikeouts.
Brendan Roder got the start on the mound for the Bobcats and went three innings. He gave up six runs, five earned, on eight hits and struck out two. Braxton Kelly got the win and improved to 5-2 with 2 1/3 innings of relief. Kelly surrendered four earned runs on two hits. Chase Harris went 3 2/3 innings to close things out for Ohio. He struck out two batters and scattered three hits.
The Cardinals close out the regular season with a four-game stint at Miami. Game one is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start time on Thursday, May 19.

"It was two good hitting teams. We won two and they won two. It was the first time we split a conference series this season. We're 28-7 and I can't argue with that because we've played our hearts out. You got to give them credit, they really hit the baseball."
