Schweitzer Records 100th Strikeout of the Season, Cardinals Fly High Over RedHawks

OXFORD, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team returned to the diamond on Thursday at McKie Field at Hayden Park for game one of a four-game series at Miami. The Cardinals relied on outstanding pitching and timely hitting to claim the 7-4 victory.
Tyler Schweitzer produced another strong outing for the Cardinals as he went 6 1/3 innings in the winning effort. He improved to 10-2 on the season. He recorded eight strikeouts and moved his season total to 102 for the year. This is the first time in his career that he eclipsed 100 strikeouts.
Amir Wright has reached safely in 51 of the 52 games this season and extended his streak to 25-straight games. Trenton Quartermaine improved his streak of reaching base safely to 28 games. Nick Powell has reached safely in 15 straight, while Ryan Peltier improved his streak to 12 games.
Powell led Ball State at the plate with a 3-for-5 game. Quartermaine notched a game-high four RBIs to go along with his 2-for-5 day. Wright and Adam Tellier each added two hits for the day. Wright, Adam Christianson, and Justin Conant all scored two runs each.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 35-17 overall and 29-7 in the MAC, while the RedHawks fell to 23-30 overall and 18-19 in league play.
Tellier led off the top of the second with a single up the middle. Ryan Peltier followed with a single to left and advanced to second on the throw to third. Christianson drew a five-pitch walk and loaded the bases for the Cardinals. Conant reached on a fielder's choice as the pitcher got the BSU runner out at the plate. Wright singled on a high chopper to the second baseman to score Peltier from third. Quartermaine reached on a fielder's choice as Wright was out at second, but Christianson was able to score. BSU took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the second.
The RedHawks got on the board in the bottom of the second and cut the Cardinal lead to 2-1 after two innings in the books. Miami tied the game in the bottom of the third 2-2.
Christianson led off the top of the fourth with a single to right field. Conant drew an eight-pitch walk to give the Cardinals runners on first and second with no outs. Wright reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and Christianson was able to score on the play. Quartermaine singled to right center to plate Conant and Wright. Ball State held a 5-2 lead as the game went to the bottom of the fourth.
The RedHawks responded with two runs on two hits and one Cardinal error. Miami cut the Ball State lead to 5-4 after four innings of play.
Conant and Wright got things started in the top of the eighth with back-to-back walks. Quartermaine singled to right field and scored Conant from second. Nick Powell grounded into a double play, but Wright was able to score from third to give the Cardinals a 7-4 lead as the game went to the bottom of the eighth.
Sam Klein pitched a scoreless 2 2/3 innings in relief and picked up his MAC-leading 10th save of the season. He finished the game with two strikeouts.
Jonathan Brand got the start on the mound for Miami and picked up the loss. He fell to 8-2 on the season. He went five innings and surrendered five runs, three earned. He struck out five batters. Kenton Egbert tossed four innings in relief and gave up two earned runs on five hits. He added three strikeouts. Stephen Krause led the RedHawks with a two-hit game.
The Cardinals and RedHawks return to McKie Field at Hayden Park for a twin bill on Friday. The first pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m.
