Women’s Tennis Opens MAC Play With 6-1 Road Win At EMU
March 12, 2021 | Women's Tennis
YPSILANTI, Mich. -The Cardinals highly anticipated Mid-American Conference season has officially begun as Ball State earned an impressive 6-1 win at Eastern Michigan today in its league opener.
The Cardinals (10-2, 1-0 MAC) have now won their 10th straight match in row when they defeated the Eagles (6-5, 0-1) this afternoon at the Chippewa Club.
"Great first match for us," Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris said. "Eastern Michigan is a very smart, persistent and mentally tough team. They give you absolutely nothing. We had to focus every point and every game. I am really proud of our fight."
As Norris said after the match the score doesn't reflect the competitiveness that occurred today, and the win had to definitely be earned by BSU.
The Ball State duo of Emma Peeler and Amy Kaplan won fairly easily at the No. 2 doubles position only giving up two games to Luisa Pelayo and Grace Whitney to take the match 6-2.
EMU then evened the score after taking the top court by a 6-4 decision. So, the doubles point would come down to the No. 3 slot which was a close battle. Livia Lukacs and Victoria Sec stayed strong to clinch the doubles point after beating Emma Lou-Pommiers and Vasavi Ganesan, 7-5.
Kaplan and Mariya Polishchuk were quick off the court in singles pushing the Cardinals cushion to 3-0. It would be veteran Rebecca Herrington's straight set (6-2, 6-4) victory over Lou-Pommiers that would win the match for BSU.
The Ball State women's tennis team returns to Mid-American Conference play next Friday on March 19 at home against Miami. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center or indoors at the Northwest YMCA, weather permitting.
