MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team (2-2) registered a 5-2 victory over Dayton (1-2) Saturday evening at the Northwest YMCA.
The Cardinals were able to take the early 1-0 edge over the Flyers by posting doubles wins on courts two and one, respectively. The No. 2 duo of Ian Brady and Andrew Hayward were the first to exit the court after defeating Dayton's twosome of Mikel Zinder and Eric Suk, 6-3. Shortly after, the top court of Mason Tran and Jacks Lancaster secured the doubles point after tallying a 6-4 defeat against Kyle McNally and Brady Hussey.
It was a tightly contested singles competition on five of the six courts. Sajin Smith breezed through his match at No. 3 singles beating Alfons Ridstrom, 6-1, 6-2 which extended the Cardinals lead to 2-0.
After that, Dayton won its first point at the No. 2 slot as four courts remained. All four remaining courts went to three sets.
Hayward fell in his first frame to Sainandan Dore on court No. 5 by a score of 6-4 but rallied back to take sets two (6-2) and three (6-3) which put Ball State in the position to take the match from Dayton.
Petar Petrovic's three set (6-4, 1-6, 7-5) thriller over Kaiaitz Mendibe at slot No. 6 claimed the victory for Ball State.
Tran would then round out the singles victories after completing a three-frame comeback versus Dayton's No. 4 singles player Sturle Hoff Skigelstrand, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
