Men's S&D Swims Past IUPUI, 164-136
November 03, 2023 | Men's Swimming and Diving
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's swimming & diving team celebrated senior night in style Friday night at the Lewellen Aquatic Center, earning a hard-fought 164-136 victory over visiting IUPUI.
Â
"Everyone came out here and gave it their all for the seniors, and I couldn't be more excited about the night," head coach J. Agnew said after the meet. "If you look at how far this program has come, it's been on their backs. This group has carried this program forward. When they came here, we were making progress, and they just carried the torch and ran with it. To see everybody out here to celebrate them means a lot. To see not just family but friends, and everyone got to see a great meet. What a great team to race against an incredibly strong IUPUI team. It was a great matchup today."
Â
On a night of big performances, with the Cardinals claiming wins in 10 of the 16 events, the biggest performances came from freshman Malcom Slater who honor BSU's 11 total seniors with three total event wins.
Â
Aside from the senior celebration, in which the men honored Alexander Eddy, Joey Garberick, Isaac Hunter, Bryan Lower and Zach Zishka, Slater provided the night's biggest highlight in the pool when he won the 500 freestyle in a blistering 4:38.56. The effort was 1:28 faster than second-place Youssef Magdy of IUPUI and sent the Ball State faithful into a frenzy.
Â
Overall, the Cardinals set the tone early, with Garberick combining with fifth-year seniors Bryce Handshoe and Owen Chaye, along with junior leadoff man Ethan Pheifer to win the 200 medley relay (1:31.46).
Â
Two event later Pheifer would start a string of five straight wins in the pool for the Cardinals by taking top honors in the 100 backstroke (51.89). Garberick followed with another close win in the 100 breaststroke (55.61) and Slater added his first individual victory in the 200 butterfly (1:53.34).
Â
It was Chaye's turn next, has he bookend the first brake, as well as BSU's senior celebration, by claiming top honors in the 50 (20.80) and 100 (45.79) freestyles.
Â
Following Slater's win in the 500 freestyle, Handshoe completed a butterfly sweep of the Cardinals by taking the 100 in 50.39. After the second brake, Slater touched the wall first in the 400 IM at 4:08.19 to help lock up the meet victory.
Â
Sophomore Jacob Siewers, Pheifer, Garberick and Chaye then closed the meet with a winning time of 3:05.69 in the 400 freestyle relay. Â
Â
Along with the action in the poll, Ball State's divers also made some noise Friday night. Leading the way on the 1M board was sophomore Porter Brovont who placed second in the event with an NCAA Zone Diving Qualifying score of 317.70. The score also moves Brovont from 10th to sixth on Ball State's all-time individual top performance list.
Â
On the 3M board, Hunter celebrated his senior day with a second-place finish and a collegiate best score of 313.05.
