August 20, 2021 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - With the start of the new school year on the horizon, the Ball State field hockey team opened its 2021 season by hosting Big Ten foe Indiana in an exhibition contest Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
This season is a quick turnaround from last spring's non-traditional year due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Ball State field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal, who enters her fourth season said that if the team has learned anything from the last year, it's how special being able to complete is.Â

It came to no surprise that the Cardinals opened today's game strong defensively after Ball State had one of its best defensive showings in over a decade last season. BSU held the Hoosiers scoreless for the first 23 minutes of action while limiting Indiana to only five shots in the first period. Ball State also had a pair of scoring chances in the opening 15 minutes, while earning two more in a hard-fought third period.Â
The Cardinals, who have been in fall camp now for a little over a week, have a wealth of experience returning to the field this season with 17 letterwinners to help mentor eight newcomers.Â
Ball State's official season begins Friday, August 27 at 1 p.m., when the Cardinals welcome Ohio State to the Briner Sports Complex.
