Defense Shines In Field Hockey’s Near Victory Over No. 22 Ohio State
August 27, 2021 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - It comes to no surprise that the Cardinals historic defense shined in their 2021 season opener as Ball State held the No. 22 Ohio State Buckeyes to only one goal Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
Although, the outcome didn't turn out the way the Cardinals had hoped for Ball State fourth-year head coach Stephanie Bernthal was proud of the effort her team gave today and it was tough to come up short considering it was a game of inches she explained.
The Cardinals took a lot of positives from today's defensive battle against a top-25 team. Bernthal said the team has really been focusing on ball control so far this fall and felt her team has responded well by controlling the field today over Ohio State especially in midfield action.
Defensively, goalkeeper Hannah Johnston led both goalies with four saves playing the entire 60 minutes of action. Offensively, Emma Hilton had two shot attempts for the day.
Another factor in today's slim loss to Ohio State were penalty corners with the Buckeyes leading that category with nine while the Cardinals only had four.
All-in-all the reason for the Cardinals defensive success over the Buckeyes was that Ball State not only attacked together as a group but also defended with a total team effort.
The Ball State field hockey team will now prepare for its second contest of the season when it travels to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Bellarmine Knights at 5 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 29 at Trager Stadium.
