Cardinals Suffer Rare Overtime Setback at Central Michigan

Tatiana Mason scores for season straight game to open season
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Ball State soccer team seemingly lived in overtime last season during MAC play. Not only that, they thrived.
The Cardinals played past regulation in six league games in 2019 and won them all. Not even a draw to be found in there. Go back a year further and there were no overtime losses either (there was a penalty kick defeat in the MAC championship game).
You had to go all the way back to the 2017 MAC Tournament to find the last time Ball State lost a game in overtime. The Cardinals were 12-0-3 in OT since then.
It was a streak that was bound to come to an end someday. Sunday, it finally happened.
Despite having the best chances late in regulation and for much of overtime, Ball State saw Central Michigan score a rebound goal in the 100th minute – just 15 seconds away from a second extra period – for a 2-1 win.
The Cardinals, who opened with a home win Thursday over Toledo, wrapped up the opening week of this delayed season at 1-1-0 and will return home for three of their next four. Central Michigan is also 1-1-0 after Sunday's win.
"A tough match today," BSU head coach Josh Rife said. "Not our most complete game from start to finish, but we put ourselves in position to get a result after being down 1-0. The players did a great job of making adjustments, and I'm proud of the effort."
Tatiana Mason scored the Ball State goal Sunday, a much-needed equalizer in the 70th minute when Nicky Potts flipped the ball over a CMU defender and found her in stride right in front of the net. It was the second goal in two games for the junior and the 10th of her career.
Central Michigan, which had taken the lead on a header from Amanda Britain in the 26th minute, succeeded in the possession game for much of the afternoon until Ball State tied it up.
The majority of the chances from then on went to the Cardinals, like looks from Mason and Melissa Diceman saved by CMU keeper Allison LaPoint in the closing minutes of regulation and a pair of attacks in the box whistled for offside during that stretch.
The Cardinals generated opportunities early in overtime too. But it was late in overtime when Lauren DeBeau broke free and found herself face-to-face with BSU keeper Mai Bravo. Bravo did well to save the initial attempt, but Natalie Belsito was there to knock in the rebound.
Bravo, who had the shutout of Toledo in her BSU debut on Thursday, was credited with five saves against Central Michigan.
Ball State returns to action Friday, hosting Western Michigan at 3 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex. No general public attendance is permitted this season.
