Because of concerns surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, general public attendance will not be permitted at the Briner Sports Complex this season.
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team hosts Western Michigan on Friday for a key early-season matchup between two of the projected top teams in the MAC West Division.
Â
Ball State was picked to win the division, while Western Michigan was picked third but received two first-place votes.
Â
The Broncos (2-0-0) are off to a fast start with a pair of shutout victories under their belt, having scored all five of their goals in the second half. WMU opened with a 1-0 victory at Northern Illinois courtesy an 82nd-minute tally from Bailey Korhorn.
Â
The Broncos then scored all four of their goals after halftime in a rout of Eastern Michigan, the division's preseason No. 2 pick. Suzuna Shibukawa and Kayla Whelchel both scored twice in that win.
Â
Ball State (1-1-0) split its first two games last week and enters Friday's matchup with a chance to draw even with Western Michigan in the standings.
Â
Tatiana Mason has scored in both games for the Cardinals -- a 2-0 home win over Toledo and a 2-1 overtime loss at Central Michigan, BSU's first OT defeat since 2017. Shelby Kean accounted for the other BSU goal in the season-opening win.
Â
Ball State has won the past five meetings with Western Michigan, including a 2-1 victory in overtime last season in Kalamazoo. Claudia Como scored in that game, and former Cardinal Julia Elvbo netted the game-winner in the first OT.
Â
Jenna Dombrowski scored against the Broncos two seasons ago in a 3-0 win in Muncie. The Cardinals also defeated WMU in overtime in that year's MAC Tournament semifinals.
