Cardinals Control Action, Come up with Scoreless Draw versus WMU

BSU leads 16-3 in shots, 12-1 in corner kicks against Broncos
MUNCIE, Ind. -- In a matchup of teams likely to contend for the MAC West Division championship, Ball State and Western Michigan battled to a scoreless draw Friday at the Briner Sports Complex.
Ball State (1-1-1) controlled possession throughout, creating monstrous advantages in shots, 16-3, and corner kicks, 12-1. But the Cardinals could not slip one past Maggie Rogers who made nine saves on the day for WMU (2-0-1) and successfully played every set piece and cross into her territory.
"It feels a little hollow at times when you can say we created a lot of good chances, we played well, and you don't find the back of the net," BSU head coach Josh Rife said. "That's obviously frustrating and disappointing, but I don't think there's anything to be upset about … We were right there to maybe score a couple, but overall pleased with the effort, pleased with the performance."
Tatiana Mason and Chelcy Ralph put two shots on goal each to led Ball State's offensive attack, though the Cardinals were shut out for the first time this season.
Of course, the Cardinals also kept a clean sheet. Center backs Emily Simmons and Lexy Smith went the distance, as did midfielder Sammi Corcoran, while senior goalkeeper Maitane Bravo posted her second shutout in three games this season. It came against a Broncos team fresh off an outburst of four goals in a single half against Eastern Michigan.
Ball State ratcheted up the attack late in regulation and throughout overtime, seemingly playing exclusively in and around WMU's 18-yard box, but just couldn't find a goal. The Cardinals dodged the Broncos' only overtime chance on a counter attack when Bailey Korhorn's sliding shot went wide of the net.
Friday marked the only game this weekend for a Ball State team that will return to action Thursday with a 3 p.m. contest against Northern Illinois, again at the Briner Sports Complex.
