Women’s Tennis Remains Unblemished In MAC Play
March 21, 2021 | Women's Tennis
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Each and every Mid-American Conference match is important, and todays was no exception as the Cardinals managed to take home a 6-1 win against a very competitive and successful Western Michigan team Sunday afternoon at Sorenson Courts.
Ball State (12-2, 3-0 MAC) extended its win streak to 12 with its victory over the Broncos (11-1, 3-1 MAC) but it wasn't like the Cardinals breezed through today's competition. As head coach Max Norris said after the contest the Cardinals showed amazing toughness against a strong and spirited Western Michigan team.
It was a competition on every court, said Norris, but Ball State prevailed earning the first point early on after taking the doubles competition. Silvia Martinez, alongside Jessica Braun, were the first twosome off the court after posting a 6-1 take down over WMU's Kristina Tiraspolsky and Karin Hamilton at the No. 2 position. After that it was a battle on the top court where the outcome could have gone either direction but thankfully it was BSU's Amy Kaplan and Emma Peeler who would end up on top winning the match 7-5 over Femke Tjon-A-Joe and Ana Guadiana.
Ball State went up quickly in singles play taking courts five and six in that order to push its lead to 3-0. The game-winner came down to court two where Jessica Braun registered a 6-4, 7-5 defeat over Lindsey Ziegler to win the match for the Cardinals.
Other winners today for BSU were Peeler and Herrington, who won in a three -set thriller at the No. 1 and No. 4 spots, respectively.
At the end of the day Ball State took down a very good Western Michigan team in Mid-American Conference action. Norris was very pleased the Cardinals took home the win and they can now grow from it the remainder of the season.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action on Friday, March 26 at home against Bowling Green. First serve is at 1 p.m. ET at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center or indoors at the Northwest YMCA, weather permitting.
