Cardinals run winning streak to four, now return home for six in a row
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Jessica Braun and Silvia Martinez won two singles matches each to lead the Ball State women's tennis team to a Saturday sweep of Youngstown State.
The Cardinals (4-2) defeated the Penguins 4-1 in the day's first match and 4-0 in the second to run their winning streak to four. Youngstown State (4-6), which was coming off a win over MAC foe Toledo, saw its three-match winning streak snapped.
Ball State lost only the doubles point of the first contest and won every singles match on the day that was played out to completion.
"I am very proud of our toughness both physically and mentally today," BSU head coach Max Norris said. "Youngstown has such a good program. Their players compete very hard and are smart. Mickael (Sopel) does a great job there every year."
Braun dropped only five total games over two wins at No. 3 singles, while Martinez lost just seven games over her two wins at the No. 6 position.
Emma Peeler at No. 1 singles and Livia Lukacs at No. 5 accounted for BSU's other victories in the first match, while Amy Kaplan at No. 5 provided the other singles victory needed in the afternoon after the Cardinals took the doubles point.
"We did not play as well as they did in doubles, but in the second match I think we made some progress," Norris said. "In singles, we focused well and competed hard in both matches. A lot of players got put in different situations, and that's huge for growth."
The three unfinished singles matches in the afternoon were tighter, but the Cardinals breezed to the three wins they needed. In fact, every BSU singles victory on the day came in straight sets.
With the team results already decided, Rebecca Herrington and Mariya Polishchuk saw both of their matches go unfinished, while Peeler's afternoon match was also unfinished.
Ball State will now return home for six in a row, starting Tuesday (4 p.m.) and Wednesday (6:15 p.m.) with a back-to-back against Oakland at Muncie's Northwest YMCA Tennis Center.
