Women’s Tennis Wins First Of Two Matches This Week Against Oakland
February 23, 2021 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team carried its momentum from this past weekend into tonight's match against Oakland, earning a 6-1 victory over the Grizzlies Tuesday night at the Northwest YMCA.
The Cardinals (5-2) extended their win streak to five this evening in the first of two matches that BSU will play against Oakland (0-1) this week. Ball State will take on the Grizzlies again tomorrow night at home with a 6:15 p.m. ET first serve.
In Oakland's first match of the season, the Grizzlies came ready to play by taking the doubles point from the Cardinals.
After the match, Ball State ninth year head coach Max Norris credited the Grizzlies on their doubles victory. He said Oakland not only served the ball well but had some great returns and cashed in on some great opportunities. Norris could tell that the coaching staff had prepared their team well for tonight's competition.
Due to a limited number of Grizzlies on the court, Ball State had tied the match 1-1 before singles even started winning at the No. 6 slot by default.
The Cardinals though didn't drag their feet for long, as the score escalated quickly (3-1) after senior Rebecca Herrington along with teammate sophomore Amy Kaplan took their respective opponents down on courts three and four in straight sets.
Shortly after, Emma Peeler clinched the winning point on the top court, defeating Oakland's Nira Patel, 6-3, 6-3.
BSU went on to take the remainder of the courts from the Grizzlies. The match was capped off by a thrilling comeback from the Cardinals' No. 2 singles player Mariya Polishchuk who won a two-set tiebreaker over Yasmin Glazbrook, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.
Norris ended the night saying how fantastic he thought the Cardinals did on turning the page in singles and that he was looking forward to another good match and opportunity tomorrow against the Grizzlies.
