Cardinals Hang With #22 Arizona In Season Opener
February 20, 2021 | Baseball
TUCSON, Arizona - The Ball State baseball season began its 100th season Friday night in the desert, taking on a nationally-ranked opponent. A couple of early runs was the difference for host and No. 22 Arizona in a 3-0 ballgame.Â
In its first game in 345 days, Ball State got two hits from Trenton Quartermaine and solid work from three pitchers. Arizona, ranked in every poll and even as his as 10th in the Collegiate Baseball News preseason ranking, plated two runs in the bottom of the 1st and added an insurance run on a groundout in the 5th. That was it. Other than those plays, the game was nearly an even match.
"I thought our team battled. Zach Losey and Ty Johnson were outstanding," head coach Rich Maloney said. "Arizona was able to get one timely hit and we didn't. That was the difference in the game. There was a lot to like and things we need to improve on."
After starter Ty Weatherly got the first 12 outs, Losey came in and scattered three hits over three innings. Johnson, a freshman making his first college appearance, struck out three and induced a groundout in his inning of work.Â
Some top plays included a double play turnd with the bases loaded, a play Maloney called "huge." Also, Nick Powell cut down a runner at second base early in the game with a nice throw.Â
Each team had five hits. It was a double from Arizona's Ryan Holgate in the 1st inning that scored two runs. It was the only extra-base hit in the game. Arizona's pitching kept BSU off the board to preserve the lead. Chase Silseth, making his first appearance for Arizona, went 5.2 innings for the win.Â
The 100th season of Ball State baseball continues Feb. 20-22 with three more games at Arizona. Saturday's second game will start at 8 p.m. ET (6 MT).
