The 100th Season of BSU Baseball
After 345 days, Ball State baseball returns to the diamond for its 100th varsity season. The Cardinals open the year with likely their toughest opponent, a four-game set visiting the nationally-ranked Arizona Wildcats.Â
BSU went 7-9 in the abbreviated season last year but returns several key contributors from a 2019 team that went 38-19 (20-5 in conference). The Cardinals were picked third in the preseason MAC poll and either third or fourth in the league in most major outlets.
Arizona (10-5 last year), is nationally-ranked in all the major polls and projects to be the best opponent of the season for BSU. Arizona has the following preseason rankings:
- #22 in D1Baseball.com poll
- #17 in NCBWAÂ poll
- #10 in Collegiate Baseball News poll
Following the season-opening weekend, BSU will travel to Charleston, S.C., for its annual trip to the Swig & Swine Classic.
Â
What To Know For This Weekend
Â
-- Ball State is as good as it gets up the middle. It starts with Academic All-American captain and 6th-year catcher Chase Sebby, the 2019 MAC Defensive Player of the Year. Noah Navarro is a proven bat and speed guy at 2B and Justin Conant is lauded for consistency at SS. Aaron Simpson returns in CF, he hit .316 in 2019 and led the team in average for much of that season.
Â
-- Before the 2020 season ended, Trenton Quartermaine was already emerging as a major contributor. In his first 14 games at BSU, Quartermaine hit .360 with a team-high 13 RBIs while playing 1B and 3B and even pitching once. He's expected to begin at 1B and be a mainstay in the middle of the order.Â
Â
-- 6-6 righty Ty Weatherly is expected to get the ball in the season opener. He's appeared in 21 career games and would be making his fourth career start. The third-year sophomore averages 11.3 Ks per 9 innings.
