McClay Scores In Final Minutes; FH Suffers 5-1 Setback At Longwood
October 22, 2021 | Field Hockey
FARMVILLE, Va. - The Ball State field hockey program opened its two-game road weekend against Longwood University Friday afternoon in Mid-American Conference action, suffering a 5-1 loss to the Lancers. Â
Although the Cardinals competed hard, Ball State (4-11, 2-4 MAC) was unable to slow down Longwood's (9-5, 4-2 MAC) three-goal first half. The Lancers would add two more scores after intermission.Â
The Cardinals did manage to score against Longwood's strong defense in the final minutes of action. Kerrianne McClay, who has been an offensive force for Ball State this season, found the back of the cage at the 48:39 mark after making a strategic move around a Lancer defender for the score off the high right post. Â
The goal was the third of the season for McClay and sixth of her career. Â
Defensively, Ally Butler made her goalkeeping return with 11 saves.Â
The Ball State field hockey team will play a non-conference game at Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.Â
