SET-BY-SET SUMMARY
Set One (BSU 25, QUEENS 20)- The opening game remained close until late as Queens held a lead with the score 14-13. The Cardinals then rallied off a 5-1 run fueled by consecutive kills from Martinski to gain some separation. The Royals kept it close, but with the score at 22-20, BSU scored the final three points of the set to take a 1-9 advantage in the match.
Set Two (BSU 25, QUEENS 15)- The Cardinals scored in bunches in set two as they rattled off three 3-0 runs and one 4-0 stretch. Holding a 23-13 advantage, Ball State subbed in Ryan Dorgan for his first action since the 2018 season. He would go on to register the final kill and give the Cardinals a decisive 2-0 lead.
Set Three (BSU 25, QUEENS 23)- The third and final game was by far the most difficult for Ball State to put away. The Cardinals raced out to an early 7-3 advantage, but could not separate any further as the Royals stormed back to tie the game at 17-all with a 3-0 run. Queens kept it close, but with the set tied at 22 apiece, BSU scored three of the match's final four points and closed the sweep on a Szews kill assisted by Romano.
QUOTES AND NOTES
-"I think there are things we did really well at times this weekend. There were some moments where our defensive intensity was good tonight, and it was nice to see our offense come around. More than anything, I think it was good we were able to play a lot of different players in these two matches. We wanted to get a lot of different guys some experience and I think we accomplished that. Moving forward, we will probably tighten up the rotation a little bit, but it is nice to know we have plenty of guys that can contribute when called upon." – Head coach Joel Walton.
-As a redshirt freshman, Martinski made his Ball State debut Saturday night and finished with six kills, two assists, one ace, three blocks and seven digs.
-After Quinn Isaacson got the start at setter Friday night and tallied 23 assists, Romano started Saturday and totaled 36 assists. The two split time a season ago and will both contribute this year as well.
-The Cardinals remained perfect on replay-reviewed plays this season, winning Saturday's only challenge which was initiated by Queens. BSU is not 4-for-4 on the year.
-Head Coach Joel Walton now has 393 wins for his career and is narrowing in on the 400 mark. He has the second-most wins among active Division I head coaches.
UP NEXT
Ball State now embarks on a six-game road swing, starting in the state of California. The Cardinals will face Cal State Northridge Friday, January 17, and UC Santa Barbara the next night.
