Field Hockey Remains Undefeated At Home; Defeats CMU
September 28, 2019 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (3-7, 1-1 MAC) shutout Central Michigan by a score of 2-0 (2-8, 0-2 MAC) in Mid-American Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex. With the win, the Cardinals remain undefeated at home this season.
"Thanks to everybody who came out today for our home game it was an awesome matchup against Central Michigan," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "We got a little more of an offensive output which has been a goal of ours throughout the season and of course a shutout is always great. Grace Chavez did a great job to seal that up for us today. We are looking forward to next week another home game against Kent State."
The Cardinals took control of the game late in the first quarter, with Angel Nkosi's dominating move to connect with the back of the cage after the feed from redshirt senior Michelle Shampton. Later in the second frame, junior Abby Ferenczy tallied her first score of the season to give Ball State the 2-0 advantage over the Chippewas at intermission.
Although both teams went scoreless in the third and fourth quarters, it wasn't because they didn't have their chances. Ball State and Central Michigan each had four penalty corners for the game. The Cardinals and the Chippewas had three apiece in the final frame but neither team could score.
Today's game marked the Cardinals third shutout of the season. Ball State's defense has been one of its biggest weapons all this fall. The Cardinals goalkeeper junior Grace Chavez collected three saves against CMU and earned her first win of the season while teammate junior Audrey Tabor continues to be a force to reckon with after earning a defensive save against the Chippewas.
The Ball State field hockey team remains home in Mid-American Conference action Friday when it hosts Coach Bernthal's alma mater Kent State at the Briner Sports Complex. The game is slated for a 3 p.m. ET start and will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.
