Field Hockey Loses Tough Defensive Battle to Kent State
October 04, 2019 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Friday's Ball State field hockey game came down to one goal, which unfortunately went to Kent State. As a result, the Cardinals lost a tough defensive battle against the Golden Flashes at the Briner Sports Complex.
Â
"I am so proud of the girls it's the best I have ever seen them play," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "We were definitely the aggressors in this game. I think we put a really good team on their heels. I truly believe this team is on a path to greatness. The maturing is happening every day. I can't put into words how much they are each growing, they are really trusting and working together. It is a huge shift for our program which falls on the shoulders of a lot of people who came before us and were able to set an example for the future of the Ball State field hockey program."
Â
With the loss, Ball State falls to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in Mid-American Conference action, while Kent State improves to 6-5 on the season and 2-0 in league play.
Â
Kent State scored in the opening minutes of the first frame to take the early 1-0 edge over Ball State. After that, the Cardinals held the Golden Flashes scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
Â
The Golden Flashes controlled play the majority of the competition until the furious late fourth quarter rally by the Cardinals.Â
Â
Over the final 3:14, Ball State earned six penalty corners, including one with just over a second on the game clock to give BSU a glimmer of hope of sending the competition into overtime. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to find the back of the cage as time expired.
Â
For the game, Ball State's defense stopped 15 of Kent State's 16 shots withÂ
true freshman goalie Wiestke Overdijkink leading the way with eight saves.  Classmate Libby Kraus also registered a defensive save against the Golden Flashes.
Â
The Ball State field hockey team will play a non-conference game in Columbus, Ohio Saturday, Oct. 12 against Stanford. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
