Women’s Golf Makes Annual Trek to Arizona for Rio Verde Invitational
February 21, 2019 | Women's Golf
This weekend’s tournament features MAC flavor with eight league teams
UPDATE: Friday's opening round was canceled because of snow. The tournament has been shortened to 36 holes, with 18 Saturday and 18 Sunday.
It may not be the ideal forecast for Arizona this time of year, but a chilly, rainy week promises to give way to clear skies and highs in the 50's by the time the Ball State women's golf team tees off Friday at the Rio Verde Invitational.
Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan hosts the annual event on the Quail Run Course at Rio Verde Country Club. Six other MAC squads are part of the 18-team field – Akron, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and Ohio.
The field also features defending champion Seton Hall, along with Arkansas State, Boise State, Bradley, Illinois State, Little Rock, Missouri State, UMKC, Wichita State and Xavier.
The Cardinals started their 2019 spring season earlier this month when they hosted the Ball State Sunshine Invitational in Dade City, Florida. The match play event served as a learning experience for the young team.
Emily Knouff led the Cardinals with 1.5 points over the three matches, including a full point in BSU's 4.5-1.5 loss to tournament champion James Madison on the final day of competition.
Manon Tounalom, who led Ball State with a 19th-place finish at Rio Verde last year, headlines the Cardinals' lineup again this weekend for the team's first stroke play event of the spring.
Knouff and fellow sophomore Liz Kim are competing for the second straight year after helping BSU to a seventh-place finish last spring. Freshmen Morgan Lewis and Hadley Moritz round out the lineup, while fellow rookie Dylann Armstrong will play as an individual.
The 54-hole tournament features three rounds over three days, culminating with the final 18 holes Sunday. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
