Larkins' -2 (70) Leads Women's Golf in Final Round of Boilermaker Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - Freshman Taylor Larkins turned in the first sub-par round of the season for the Ball State women's golf team Tuesday, helping the Cardinals climb one spot up the final leaderboard of the Boilermaker Classic on the Kampen-Cosler Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
The Cardinals finished 14th as a team, with its final round score of +15 (303) being its best of the two-day event. Overall, Ball State shot +64 (928), battling a 16-team field which included 11 programs ranked in the top 100 nationally a year ago. The University of Miami won the event at -10 (854), while Ole Miss placed second at -5 (859).
In her strong final round, Larkins carded four birdies to shoot -2 (70) on the 6,299-yard course. The effort tied as the sixth-lowest round of the day and helped Larkins climb 24 spots in the final standings, finishing tied for 40th overall at +12 (228).
Starting on hole 14, Larkins opened the round with six straight pars, before collecting her first birdie on the par 3, 150-yard second. After two more pars, she picked up her second par 3 birdie on the 168-yard fifth. Larkins added birdies on the ninth and 12th, while also sinking four more par putts down the stretch.
Sophomore Ashley Kirkland boasted Ball State's second-best score of the day, and her best of the event, finishing at +5 (77). Her final round included three birdies, raising her tournament total to nine which tied for 16th overall among the 93-golfer field. Kirkland would finish second on the squad at +18 (234).
The Cardinals also counted a pair of +6 (78)s from junior Sophie Korthuijs and freshman Lexi Ray Tuesday. While neither player collected a birdie on the day, the each played 13 holes at par. Korthuijs tied for 70th overall at +21 (237), while Ray finished tied for 75th at +22 (238).
Freshman Elizabeth Coleman also finished tied for 70th overall with a final score of +21 (237), while senior JJ Gregston placed 83rd at +25 (241). Both would card one birdie in their final rounds.
The Ball State women's golf team returns to action Monday, Sept. 14, for the first two rounds of the Brittany Kelly Classic at The Players Club at Woodland Trails in Yorktown, Indiana.
