MUNCIE, IND. - - There will be a lot of new in the lineup Monday, when the Ball State women's golf team opens the 2026-27 season with the first two rounds of the Boilermaker Classic at the Kampen-Cosler Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
Four fresh faces will take to the course for the Cardinals starting at the top of the lineup with sophomore Ashley Kirkland who joins the squad after earning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors at Xavier last season. Kirkland helped guide the Musketeers to the Big East Championship title and a team berth into the NCAA Louisville Regional, playing in the No. 5 slot in both events
Ball State's opening-tournament quintet will also feature freshmen Lexi Ray, Elizabeth Coleman and Taylor Larkins. All of whom will be making their collegiate debuts.
The lone familiar face in the lineup, junior Sophie Korthuijs, who enters her third season with the lowest career scoring average in program history at 75.45. She has played in 53 career rounds for the Cardinals and already ranks 10th on BSU's career charts with nine career rounds played at-or-below par.
While the season-opening lineup may look different, the goals are still the same - adding to the program record tally and competing for a Mid-American Conference championship at the end of the season.
Last year, the Cardinals set the program standard with a 299.24 scoring average. It was the first sub-300 mark in program history and included the lowest 18-hole (282 / -6), 36-hole (574 / -2) and 54-hole (862 / -2) scores in program history.
Helping Ball State reach those marks were returning seniors JJ Gregston and Jenna Estravillo, along with returning sophomore Skylar Dean. In fact, Gregston currently ranks sixth in program history with a 76.57 scoring average while Estravillo is 13th at 78.10. Dean averaged 76.72 strokes in her inaugural campaign in 2025-26.
What better way to start the chase for new program records than at the place it all started last season, the Kampen-Cosler Golf Course. In fact, in last season's Boilermaker Classic the Cardinals turned in its three lowest rounds ever on the course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Ball State started the season with rounds of +11 (299), +8 (296) and +5 (293) to finish sixth among a highly talented field. The effort helped the Cardinals top a pair of NCAA Regional teams from a year ago, in Western Kentucky (+40; 904) and Georgia Southern (+42; 906).
