Coleman Leads Women's Golf on Day 1 of Boilermaker Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - Led by an opening-round +3 (75) from freshmen Elizabeth Coleman, the Ball State women's golf team battled throughout the day in the first two rounds of the Boilermaker Classic on the Kampen-Cosler Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
Competing against a talented field featuring 11 teams in the top 100 national a year ago, Cardinals are currently 15th among the 16-team field with a score of +49 (625).
The University of Miami leads the field at E (576), while Ole Miss is second at +3 (581). Kent State, the 27-time defending MAC Champion, is currently 12th overall and 16 strokes ahead of the Cardinals at +33 (609).
In her collegiate debut, Coleman turned in Ball State's lowest round of the day by carding a +3 (75) in the opening round. Starting on hole 14, she registered pars on four of her first five holes, before recording her first collegiate birdie on the par 4, 365-yard first hole.
She followed the birdie with six consecutive pars, while finishing the round with 13. Coleman, who would go on to shoot +7 (79) in the second round including two more birdies, currently leads the Cardinals and is tied for 49th among the 93-player field at +10 (154).
Freshman Lexi Ray turned in Ball State's lowest second round score, and the team's second-lowest round of the day, with a +5 (77). Starting on hole 13, she recorded three straight pars before collecting a birdie on the par 5, 524-yard 16th.
Ray added another par on 17 and concluded her round with four straight pars on holes 9-12. She is currently tied for 76th overall at +16 (160).
In her Ball State debut, sophomore Ashley Kirkland led the Cardinals with six total birdies, marking down two in her opening round and four in her second round. All six birdies came on different holes and helped Kirkland finished the day tied for 60th overall at +13 (157).
Also making her Ball State debut was freshman Taylor Larkins who is currently tied for 64th overall at +14 (158). She recorded one birdie in each of her two rounds, including starting her collegiate career with a birdie on the par 4, 342-yard 15th and finishing the opening round at +6 (78).
Other Ball State highlights include a round of +7 (79) from junior Sophie Korthuijs in round one, as well as three birdies from senior JJ Gregston over the opening 18.
The Ball State women's golf team concludes play in the Boilermaker Classic Tuesday morning with another 9 a.m. shotgun start.
