Field Hockey Ends Season With 3-0 MAC Tourney Loss To Longwood
November 07, 2019 | Field Hockey
OXFORD, Ohio - The fourth-seeded Ball State field hockey team (5-13, 3-3 MAC) wrapped up its 2019 season with a 3-0 loss to fifth-seeded Longwood (9-9, 3-3 MAC) Thursday morning in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, on the campus of Miami University.
It was the first time the Cardinals had ever faced Longwood in the MAC Tournament. Ball State defeated the Lancers in regular season action, 2-1, in overtime.
Longwood jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of action. The Lancers added another goal at the 32:04 mark to take a 2-0 lead early in the second half.
Ball State turned up its defense after the half, creating multiple opportunities to score but struggled to find the back of the cage. On paper, both teams played pretty evenly, Longwood's goalkeeper had three saves, and both goalies for the Cardinals, Grace Chavez and Wietske Overdijkink combined for three saves as well.
Offensively, Longwood compiled five more shots than the Cardinals, but the Lancers constant ball movement and defensive tactics were the key factor in today's victory.
The Cardinals entered the tournament on a high note with junior Sierra Jefferson earning Second Team All-MAC yesterday, marking her first postseason award. Ball State also swept MAC Weekly honors after senior Michelle Shampton earned the league's offensive player of the week and freshman Wietske Overdijkink received the defensive award.
