Field Hockey Faces Longwood At MAC Tourney Thursday

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team will head to Oxford, Ohio for the second-straight season to play in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal round Thursday on the campus of Miami University.

The Cardinals finished the regular season with an overall record of 5-12, while owning a 3-3 MAC ledger. Ball State enters the tournament for the second-straight season as the No. 4 seed and will take on the No. 5 Longwood University (8-9, 3-3 MAC) on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

"Our motivation from here on out is to bring pride to this senior class and the Ball State alums who have been behind us this whole season," Ball State field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "The team earned a phenomenal path in this tournament, and we are ready to seize the opportunity. We have been taking it a game at a time all year, playing a grueling schedule to prepare us for this time of year. We can't wait to get out there on Thursday and ride this train as long as we can."

During the regular season, Ball State defeated Longwood 2-1 in overtime on the road at the Athletics Complex on Oct. 25. Rachel Periera, scored the game-winner against the Lancers. With the victory the Cardinals snapped a two-game losing streak to Longwood and only trails in the all-time series, 6-3. Thursday's contest will be the first-ever meeting with the Lancers in the MAC Tournament as Longwood joined the league in 2014.

A win would advance Ball State to Friday's semifinal round against top-seeded Kent State at 11:30 a.m. The Cardinals fell to the Golden Flashes by a score of 1-0 on Oct. 4 at the Briner Sports Complex. The Flashes have won 14 straight over the Cardinals dating back to 2006 and lead the all-time series, 36-33.
