Cardinals Beat Ohio 2-1 on Stuteville’s Record-Breaking Day
October 27, 2019 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – For the fifth time this season the Ball State soccer team found itself in overtime. And, for the fifth time this season, the Cardinals emerged victorious. This time with a 2-1, record-breaking victory against Ohio Sunday afternoon.
Goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville earned the 36th win of her Ball State career, which gives her the most victories of any keeper in school history. It was the Cardinals' third straight win which moves them to 14-4-0 for the year and 8-2-0 in Mid-American Conference play. BSU also clinched a home game in the quarterfinal round of the upcoming MAC Tournament.
"We have made a habit out of playing these close games, but we continue to win them which is the mark of a good team," said head coach Josh Rife. "I think we all felt relief when that final goal went in, but if winning close like this every time is what it takes, I'm alright with it."
The goal Rife referenced was scored by Nicky Potts less than two minutes into overtime. Sam Kambol crossed a ball into the box that found Potts for the game-winning goal. It was Potts' eighth goal of the season and fifth game winner. Kambol registered her third assist of the week.
The Cardinals found themselves in a hole early when Ohio's Sarina Dirrig scored in just the fifth minute of the match. Peighton Cook made sure that deficit didn't last too long when she sent a rocket into the upper 90 in the 28th minute off assists from Claudia Como and Tatiana Mason. That proved to be all the scoring in regulation.
Ball State quickly possessed the ball in overtime and earned a corner kick. After Kambol's initial corner was deflected, she again found the ball and crossed it into the box where Potts was waiting to tap it in for the win.
As a team, BSU registered seven shots with six on goal. The Cardinal offense also pressed the Bobcat defense and earned seven corner kicks. Stuteville made six saves on the day.
Ball State now travels to Miami on Thursday for the regular season finale. After that match, the Cardinals will learn who they play in the MAC Quarterfinals Sunday.
