Soccer Beats Miami 2-1, Enters MAC Tournament as No. 2 Seed
October 31, 2019 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – The regular season finale for Ball State soccer was no different than the rest of the season. For the 13th time, the Cardinals won a one-score game. And, for the sixth time, that win came in overtime as BSU defeated Miami 2-1 in double overtime on Halloween evening Thursday.
The Cardinals capped off the regular season with a 15-4-0 record and 8-2-0 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The 15 wins in 2019 improve upon last season's total of 14. Ball State also finished the season second in the MAC table and enters Sunday's quarterfinal round of the tournament as the No. 2 seed. Additionally, BSU improved to a perfect 6-0 in overtime matches this season.
"It was another tough road win," said head coach Josh Rife. "I continue to be proud of our effort and resolve to find ways to win. The ladies have battled hard all season to put themselves in position to win a MAC championship and that's what's we have ahead of us now."
Miami snagged the first lead of the match in the 32nd minute but it would not last long as Nicky Potts scored her ninth goal of the season just 15 seconds later to make it a 1-1 tie. Potts was assisted by both Claudia Como and Tatiana Hawkins-Dabney on the play. The draw would last until there were just seconds remaining in the match.
In double overtime, the Cardinals were given a scare when a Miami shot deflected off the crossbar in the 105th minute. Ball State was able to clear the danger and set up its attack. With under a minute to go, Tatiana Mason fed a pass to Sammi Corcoran who scored to put the match away with just 33 second to play in regulation. It was Corcoran's second career goal at Ball State.
Ball State doubled up Miami in shots for the match with 26 to the Redhawks' 13. The Cardinals put seven of those 26 shots on goal. The BSU offense also produced six corner kicks throughout the contest. Tristin Stuteville, the winningest goalkeeper in Ball State history, recorded three saves while adding another victory to her record.
The Cardinals now return to Muncie to host Eastern Michigan in the MAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET and broadcast plans will be announced shortly.
