Field Hockey Falls To Nationally-Ranked Michigan
October 14, 2018 | Field Hockey
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Ball State field hockey team suffered a 6-0 loss to No. 7 Michigan Sunday afternoon at Pyllis Ocker Field. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-12 on the year, while the nationally ranked Wolverines improved to 11-5 overall.
Ball State was held scoreless against a stellar defense, Michigan currently ranks 19th in the nation in shutouts this season.
The Wolverines kept their offense balanced, as four different players each scored a goal. Michigan got on the board quickly, scoring within the first five minutes of play. The Wolverines would find the net three more times before heading into halftime with a 4-0 lead over the Cardinals.
Ball State's defense held Michigan to only two goals in the second period. Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Chavez led both goalies tying her career high with 13 saves. Chavez now has collected double digits saves in five games this season and has 191 for her career.
Offensively, redshirt sophomore Rachel Pereira and redshirt junior Michelle Shampton were the only two Cardinals to have a shot attempt today.
The Ball State field hockey team continues to play on the road next weekend when it faces Central Michigan (Oct. 19) in Mid-American Conference action and then at No. 18 Northwestern (Oct. 21).
