MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team will play two games on the road this weekend, visiting Kent State (Sept. 12) and No. 7 Michigan (Sept. 14). Both games are slated for 1 p.m. starts.
The Cardinals (2-10, 2-1 MAC) are coming off of a 3-2, double-overtime win over Ohio University last Friday at the Briner Sports Complex in Mid-American Conference action. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Pereira netted the game-winning goal on a penalty corner 5:47 into the double OT. She had help from teammates Sierra Jefferson and Anya Eicher, both of whom were awarded assists. The goal marked Pereira's third of the season.
On Friday, the Cardinals will face Kent State in MAC action. The Golden Flashes are 4-9 overall and also 2-1 in league play. Kent State is coming off of a 5-1 victory over Central Michigan last Sunday at Murphy-Mellis Field. Last year Ball State suffered a 2-1 loss to Kent State in Muncie. Sophomore Abby Ferenczy was the lone Cardinal to score against the Golden Flashes last season, while sophomore goalkeeper Grace Chavez tallied a then-career-high eight saves. Kent State has won 12 straight against the Cardinals dating back to 2006 and leads the all-time series, 34-33.
Ball State faces its fifth nationally ranked opponent this season when it travels to No. 7 Michigan Sunday. The Wolverines own a 9-5 overall record and a 5-1 Big Ten ledger. Michigan is coming off a 4-2 loss to No. 21 Stanford. Last year the Cardinals went scoreless against the Wolverines, falling 5-0 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
After this weekend, the Ball State field hockey team will continue to play on the road at Central Michigan (Oct. 19) and at No. 18 Northwestern (Oct. 21).
