Cardinals win by 13 strokes, Anderson earns medalist honors
LEADERBOARD
RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Ball State women's golf team ran away with its second straight victory Saturday and once again featured the tournament's individual medalist. This time it was sophomore Sydney Anderson claiming her first collegiate win.
The Cardinals entered the final day of the EKU Colonel Classic with an 11-stroke lead and stretched their final margin to 13 shots. BSU won for the second time in five days, having also taken the Kingsmill Intercollegiate earlier this week in Virginia.
Just like at Kingsmill, the magic number was 900 (+36) for a 54-hole total. The Cardinals got there Saturday with a score of 300 in the final round at the University Club at Arlington.
Ohio (+49) finished second, while tournament host Eastern Kentucky (+50) took third. Those were the only two of the 13 teams in the field to finish within 25 shots of Ball State.
Anderson began the day two strokes back on the individual leaderboard but took the lead early in the final round and never relinquished it. She carded three more birdies to bring her tournament-leading total to 10. The Columbus, Indiana, product closed with a 75 to finish with a three-round total of 220 (+4), two shots clear of runner-up Lily Pendy from Ohio.
But Anderson was just one of four Ball State players to finish among the top 10. Kelsey Sear (+9) tied forth fifth for her second top-5 finish of the season, while Allison Lindley (+10) backed up her victory at Kingsmill with a seventh-place result. They both claimed top-10s at the Colonel Classic for the third straight year.
Freshman Manon Tounalom (+14) made the Cardinals' biggest jump of the day, climbing 17 spots into 10th place with an even-par 72 in the final round. Morgan Nadaline (+21) also finished in the top half of the field, tying for 31st.
In addition to Tounalom's 72 and Anderson's 75, Ball State's counting scores Saturday were a 76 from Sear and a 77, turned in by both Lindley and Nadaline.
Ball State won the Colonel Classic for the first time after finishing runner-up twice in its previous four appearances at the event. Anderson earned the Cardinals' third individual victory at EKU; Jenna Hague won the tournament in both 2012 and 2013.
The Cardinals have now finished each of their past five rounds at the top of the leaderboard. They will return to action next weekend at the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington for their final event before the Mid-American Conference Championships.
