MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 12 Ball State men's volleyball team will travel to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the Ohio State Tournament. The Cardinals will face sixth ranked UC Irvine Friday, March 10 then will take on UC San Diego Saturday. Both matches are set to begin at 5 p.m.
Last meetings:
Last season, UC Irvine made the long trip to Muncie and fell to the Cardinals, 3-2 (25-23, 29-27, 19-25, 25-22, 15-12). For Ball State, Brendan Surane had a dominating performance in that meeting. Surane tallied a match high 22 kills, four blocks and two service aces. Matt Walsh added 13 kills and one services ace. Alex Pia knocked down seven kills and a team high nine blocks. Mitch Weiler led the team with 12 digs. For the Anteaters, Michael Saeta lead the way with 37 assists, 15 kills, five digs and two service aces.
Ball State and UC San Diego have not met since the Cardinals' sweep of the Tritons in 2015. In the 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-22, 25-20). Surane had seven kills in the contest along with three blocks and one service ace. Nate Wolf knocked down five kills while Pia added three blocks. Alec Flowers led the way for the Tritons with eight kills, eight digs and two blocks.
Cardinals Facts:
As a team, Ball State is nationally ranked in three categories. The Cardinals are second in the nation in blocks per set (2.65), fifth in team attacks per set (27.99) and fifth in opponent hitting percentage (.195). Individually, Connor Gross and Matt Walsh are nationally ranked. Walsh is first in the nation in blocks per set with 1.31 and fourth in hitting percentage with .466. Gross is fourth with 10.64 assists per set.
Matt Szews is currently second in the MIVA in kills (254), third in kills per set (3.68) and third in service aces per set (0.36). Adam Wessel sits at fifth in the conference with 2.05 digs per set.
Going into this week's matches, the Cardinals are first in the MIVA in digs per set with 8.90 and in blocks per set with 2.65. Ball State is also second in the MIVA in multiple categories: kills per set (12.61), total blocks (189), block assists (313), digs (632), assists per set (11.63) and kills (895). Ball State is third in hitting percentage at .295 and third in assists with 826.
In the 2017 season, the Cardinals have knocked down 895 kills for 12.61 kills per set. Their opponents have only knocked down 792 kills for 11.15 kills per set. Ball State also has 32 solo blocks this season and 313 block assists.
Ball State is currently third in the nation in average attendance with 1,230. The Cardinals are behind Hawaii (3,187) and BYU (3,243).
In the record books:
Freshman Matt Szews leads the team with 254 kills and 3.68 kills per set. His 3.58 kills per set also places him third in the MIVA while his 254 kills puts him second. In the two matches against Grand Canyon last week, he racked up a team high 35 kills. In the 3-0 sweep of the Lopes, Szews led the team in kills (12) and in digs (11). In round two against Grand Canyon, he tallied a career high 23 kills. That is the 17th most in school history in a five match set.
Preseason All-MIVA selection Matt Walsh sits at second in the MIVA with 1.31 blocks per set and third in hitting percentage with .466. Walsh's name can also be found all over the Ball State volleyball career record books (during rally scoring). He is sixth in attack percentage (.401), sixth in blocks per set (1.27), fifth in block assists (304), seventh in total blocks (334), 16th in service aces (47) and tied for 11th in solo blocks (30).
Senior Alex Pia also has stamped his name in the record books (during rally scoring). Pia is 10th in career blocks per set with 1.01 through 184 sets. He is also 16th in career block assists (180) and tied for 18th in total career blocks (186).
With his 22 total kills in the two matches last week, senior preseason All-MIVA selection Brendan Surane moved into ninth in school history (during rally scoring) with 699 kills. Surane is also 17th (during rally scoring) in career solo blocks with 27 along with an eighth place spot in service aces (63). He is also 15th with a career attack percentage of .283, 14th with 2.2 kills per set, 17th in block assists (169) and 15th in total blocks (196).
Connor Gross took his place in the record books, sitting at seventh (during rally scoring) in career assists with 953 through 105 sets. Last week, he had 88 assists, 11.00 assists per set along with 14 digs and seven blocks. The senior setter has 743 assists so far this season. He averages 10.64 assists per set, placing him second in the conference.
