Cardinals Fall to No. 6 UC Irvine

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12 Ball State men's volleyball team traveled to Columbus, Ohio to compete in game one of the Ohio State Tournament Friday evening. The Cardinals came up short and fell to sixth ranked UC Irvine, 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-19).
Freshman Matt Szews had another big night for the Cardinals and led the match with 11 total kills. Edgardo Cartagena and Matt Walsh each added six kills while Adam Wessel and Connor Gross added a team high eight digs each. As a team, Ball State had 31 kills compared to UCI's 47.
The Cardinals scored the first two points in the opening set, but were unable to regain the lead after the Anteaters went on a 6-0 run. Ball State was only able to capitalize on nine attacks for a .273 hitting percentage. Szews led the team in the first set with three kills while Anthony Lebyrk and Cartagena each added two.
In a back and forth second set, Ball State went on a 4-0 run and forced an Anteater timeout. UC Irvine came out of the timeout to go on their own 4-0 run to tie the set at 15. Down the stretch, UCI was able to take the set, 25-22. Cartagena, Szews and Walsh knocked down all 12 Cardinal kills, four for each of them.
In the set three 25-19 loss, Szews tallied a team high four kills. Walsh and Mike Scannell each added two kills. Gross led the way with five digs.
The Ball State men's volleyball team (14-6, 6-4 MIVA) will take the court in Columbus again tomorrow against UC San Diego. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
