Cardinals win by one stroke, Lindley shares medalist honors
LEADERBOARD
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Ball State women's golf team held off three hard-charging competitors, including tournament host William & Mary, to win the Kingsmill Intercollegiate.
Allison Lindley, whose par on the final hole Tuesday secured the Cardinals' one-shot victory, shared medalist honors with 36-hole leader Liz Choi of William & Mary.
Ball State, which took command Monday afternoon with the low round of the tournament, a 293, closed with a 307 in Tuesday's final round. The Cardinals recorded a 54-hole total of 900 (+36) on the River Course at Kingsmill Resort to finish atop the 22-team leaderboard.
William & Mary (+37) and Delaware (+37) finished one shot back, while Richmond (+39) was also in the mix down the stretch.
Lindley posted an even-par final round of 72, while Ball State also counted a pair of 78's from Manon Tounalom and Sydney Anderson to go along with a 79 from Kelsey Sear.
The battle for first place on both the team and individual leaderboards came down to the final hole of the tournament. Ball State and William & Mary were tied, and Lindley was one shot behind Choi.
When Lindley made par at the par-4 18th hole and Choi made bogey, the Cardinals claimed the team championship by one stroke, and Lindley earned a share of medalist honors. It was the first collegiate victory for the senior from Kokomo, Indiana, who finished with a 54-hole total of 217 (+1). She and Choi were three shots clear of the rest of the field.
Tounalom continued her impressive spring by tying for 13th for her third top-25 finish in four events. She was nine shots off Lindley's pace at 226 (+10).
Sear finished 28th at 229 (+13), followed by Anderson in 45th at 233 (+17) and Morgan Nadaline in 51st at 235 (+19). All five Ball State golfers placed among the top half in a field of 118 players.
This week's victories marked the first team and individual titles for Ball State since the Cardinals swept the top spots at last spring's Bulldog Florida Invitational. Sear was the individual medalist at that event.
The Kingsmill Intercollegiate marked the start of a busy week for Ball State, which will tee it up again starting Friday at the EKU Colonel Classic in Richmond, Kentucky.
