Cardinals post team score of 299 in closing round of Dr. Donnis Thompson Invite
LEADERBOARD
KAILUA, Hawaii -- Freshman Manon Tounalom fired the second-best round in Ball State women's golf history Wednesday as the Cardinals wrapped up the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.
Tounalom carded a career-best round of 4-under par 68 at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course to help Ball State to a team score of 299. The Cardinals' opening-round 300 in Hawaii was their best away from home this season, and the final round one-upped it.
Ball State moved up one spot on the final leaderboard into 12th place with a 54-hole total of 906 (+42). This week's field included 10 of the top-100 teams in the Golfstat national rankings and six teams rated among the top 40.
Only one Ball State women's golfer, Jenna Hague, has ever posted a lower score in competition than Tounalom's 68. Hague recorded a school-record 66 at the Hoosier Fall Invitational during her NCAA Regional season of 2013-14.
Tounalom' s 68 was the second-best final round score of any player in the field. BSU also counted a trio of 77s from Kelsey Sear, Allison Lindley and Sydney Anderson. Sear, Tounalom and Lindley finished the tournament's three rounds within two shots of each other.
Sear led the Cardinals for the week in a tie for 32nd with a total of 223 (+7), while Tounalom' s final round jumped her 31 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 36th at 224 (+8). Lindley gave BSU three golfers in the top 40, tying for 40th at 225 (+9).
No. 16 Texas A&M held onto its overnight lead to win the team championship by 15 strokes with a score of 859 (-5). No. 19 Oklahoma State (+10) finished second, while Washington State (+11), Idaho (+13) and No. 21 Texas (+16) rounded out the top 5.
Maddie Szeryk of Texas A&M won individual medalist honors at 207 (-9), four shots clear of Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho.
Ball State will return to action March 27-28 at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
