Men’s Volleyball Looks to Continue Win Streak Against George Mason and NJIT

MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 13 Ball State men's volleyball team has won four matches in a row and will look to conintue that when they take on No. 12 George Mason (Jan. 26) and NJIT (Jan. 27) in Worthen. Both matches are set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Last year's meetings:
In the 2016 season, Ball State defeated George Mason, 3-2 (19-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-9), in Fairfax, Virginia. Brendan Surane led the Cardinals with 12 kills, five block and four digs. Mike Scannell had seven kills while Mitch Weiler tallied five. Weiler also added four digs in the contest.
Last year, Weiler knocked down six kills while Surane had four in the Cardinal victory over the Highlanders, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-15). Scanell had two aces and one block.
Cardinals to watch:
Ball State enters this week's matches ranked third nationally in blocks per set with 2.65. Junior Matt Walsh is also ranked nationally, fourth in hitting percentage (.512) and fifth in blocks per set (1.23).
Freshman Matt Szews leads the team with 89 kills and 3.42 kills per set. His 89 kills also puts him in third in the MIVA.
Freshman Nick Lavanchy has also had a great start to his collegiate career, ranking third in the MIVA in digs per set with 2.33.
Preseason All-MIVA selection Matt Walsh put down 20 kills for an impressive .643 attack percentage in last week's action against Harvard and Sacred Heart. Walsh had nine total blocks, putting him second in the MIVA with 32. Walsh is also third in the conference with 1.23 blocks per set.
Walsh has tallied 32 total blocks (five solo blocks) through seven matches. Six other Cardinals have knocked down double digit blocks: Gross (18), Weiler (18), Szews (15), Surane (12), Anthony Lebryk (12) and Alex Pia (11).
In the record books:
Matt Walsh's name can be found all over the Ball State volleyball career record books (during rally scoring). He is sixth in attack percentage (.393), sixth in blocks per set (1.25), ninth in block assists (254 through 223 sets), 11th in total blocks (278) and tied for 17th in career solo blocks (24).
Senior Alex Pia also has stamped his name in the career record books (during rally scoring). Pia is ninth in career blocks per set with 1.05 through 163 sets. He is also 16th in career block assists (166) and 20th in total career blocks (171). Pia is three away from passing Kyle Weindel and moving into 19th place in total career blocks.
With his 21 kills in the two matches last weekend, senior Brendan Surane moved into 17th in school history (during rally scoring) with 566 kills. He is seven away from passing Paul Fasshauer. Surane is also tied for 17th (during rally scoring) in career solo blocks with 24. He is 14th with a career attack percentage of .281 and 16th with 2.12 kills per set (through 267).
Connor Gross took his place in the record books, sitting at eighth (during rally scoring) in career assists with 492 through 62 sets. The senior setter has 273 assists in the first seven games of the 2017 season. He is currently third in the MIVA with 10.50 assists per set.
Mitch Weiler racked up 62 kills, 18 blocks and 44 digs in the first seven matches of action. Weiler leads the team in career digs with 255. He is currently 18th in school history (during rally scoring) with 1.48 digs per set (through 172 sets).
