The Cardinals (19-20, 13-8 Mid-American Conference) scored first for the first time in the set against the Golden Flashes (28-10, 15-6 MAC) when Max Kalk walked and Keller drilled an 0-1 pitch over the wall in right field for the early 2-0 edge. The hosts responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame and would lead by at least three runs for the remainder of the contest.
Ball State tacked on single tallies in the fourth on a Kenskey Thomas solo homer and seventh on an RBI double from Ryan Muizelaar. Trailing 8-4 entering the ninth inning, the Cardinals had runners on second and third after a double by Keller with one out but could only score one run on a wild pitch.
Zander Bretza (1-2) started on the mound for the visitors and allowed five runs in 1.1 innings pitched to suffer the loss.
Ripken Reese, Sawyer Solitaria, Brody Williams and Luke Matthews notched two hits each for the Golden Flashes, who got home runs from Williams and Nolan Belcher. Ben Rabatin (5-1) struck out five in 5.0 innings of three-run ball to be credited with the win, and Peyton Williams came on to strike out the final two batters of the game to earn his fourth save of the season.
The next scheduled game for Ball State is Tuesday afternoon against Indiana.
