MUNCIE, Ind. -- Leaping quickly into a new season with a largely new roster, Ball State men's golf ventures to South Carolina this weekend to begin play in the Golfweek Fall Challenge. Playing their second tournament in an early two-week stretch, the Cardinals play with a nearly identical lineup to that which competed in Michigan's upper peninsula last week.
Senior Carter Smith leads the Ball State contingent at the True Blue Golf Club at Pawley's Island, S.C. The par-72, 7,005-yard course awaits 13 teams which will tee off on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. The Cardinals' lineup following Smith remains intact from last week's Island Resort Intercollegiate in Michigan: No. 2 Luke Johnston, No. 3 Cameron Young, No. 4 Samuel Harris and No. 5 Happy Gilmore. Gilmore secured the final lineup spot in qualifying rounds this week, with true freshman Brody Sorrell claiming an individual position in this week's event. Sorrell, Johnston's high school teammate Evansville North, makes his college debut this weekend.
Carter shot even par last week and junior transfer Young was a stroke behind. Freshmen Johnston and Harris each trailed Young by one more stroke as Ball State rallied in the final round to overtake Miami (Ohio) in team standings.
This week's field includes Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, East Texas A&M, Georgia Southern, Loyola (Chicago), Mercer, Nevada, North Alabama, Presbyterian, Tennessee Tech, USC Upstate and Western Carolina. Competition begins Sunday morning.
